We are currently working on a building by Clerkenwell Green. Cornwall House was built in 1978-1980 as Sessions House Hotel, it was converted in the 1920s into a spectacles factory with offices. Most recently used as craft workshops, the building is now to be renovated and the run-down interiors upgraded for use as offices and retail.

A recently submitted planning application for a 46,000 sq ft new-build office uses decorative motifs and expressive brickwork to ensure the building sits comfortably within its prominent town centre location. Inspired by local Arts and Crafts details and a book ‘The Grammar of Ornament’ by Owen Jones – a major influence on the Arts and Crafts Movement, we have taken ‘Drawings of Leaves from Nature’ and have simplified and abstracted it to create a geometric pattern….

Craft Central, a charity that promotes craftsmanship and provides studios for craftspeople, are moving to The Forge, a grade II listed building which was part of the Victorian iron shipbuilding industry. Emrys have designed a free-standing two-storey birch wood construction which makes the most of the immense internal space of The Forge whilst not compromising the fabric of the building or the internal listed features that include two overhead tracked cranes. Our summer trip this year was to Oxford where some inspiring new buildings sit alongside the old spires. We did tours of Herzog and de Meuron’s Blavatnik School of Government; Wilkinson Eyre’s Weston Library; Zaha Hadid’s Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College and rested at the roof café at the Ashmolean refurbished by Rick Mather. The beautiful sunny day showed the traditional honey-coloured Cotswold stone in its best light…
